This is a 4-40 threaded
fillister head screw with brass ferrule and brass
press-fit nut. Both the ferrule and nut have straight
knurls that pull into wood or plastic grips and keep
the brass fitting from turning.
The brass parts press-fit into a 0.25 inch hole with a
smaller hole (about 0.108 inch) for the number 4 screw.
This kit is used for most grips other than the very small
or thin pocket pistols. It has ample surface area under
the brass ferrule and nut to support any reasonable mounting
or clamping force exerted on the grips by the screw. The high
strength modern steel screw handles far more recoil and
shearing force than larger, soft iron or screw-stock steel
screws originally found in older guns.
The hardware kit is sold as a set with one ferrule,
one nut, and one screw. I also have separate screws
without the brass parts. If you've ever tried to buy
the straight-knurled, factory-original style ferrules
and nuts, you'll appreciate the ability to get just
one or two of these kits! Usually you have to either
contract for 5,000 to 10,000 of them to get any at all,
or settle for something that is not the right size and
style or length. The screw will normally be cut to
exact length by you for your gun. You can use an
electrician's multi-purpose wire stripper/pliers with
the machine screw cutting holes (a hole in one side of
the pliers is threaded, and its matching hole opposite
is not) for best results.
If you purchase a grip, I can include the screw without
any additional shipping cost.
If you tell me the length of screw that you need, in the
note section, I will be glad to select the nearest longer
one available from inventory so you have less or perhaps
no adjustment to make. The screws are available in
1-1/2 inch, 1-1/4 inch, 1-1/8 inch, 1 inch, 7/8-inch, 3/4-inch, and 5/8 inch
lengths. Sometimes I have a few odd lengths in stock
between these sizes. Normally if you don't specify I
send you the one that fits the most guns, which is the 1-1/8
inch length.
A large number of standard
size revolvers use 1-1/8 inch screw length, and smaller frame
revolvers with small, fairly thin grips often use the 7/8-inch
length. When in doubt get a longer screw than you think
you need, because the grips may not be the same thickness
as the ones which came with the gun.
