This is a generic smooth grip that can be sanded to fit
a large number of single action Colt clones, replicas or
other designs based loosely on the 1873 Single Action Army
or 1858 Navy. Send a pencil tracing of your existing grips
or of the gun's frame as described on
the TRACING page to make sure this grip will work.
Although this grip is listed under Colt and Other Brands, it
may work for any number of brands including Hawes, Heritage,
Sauer, Great Western, Uberti, Pietta, and so forth. What is
important are the dimensions, not the name.
- Front edge length (A) = 1.05 inches
- Overall height (B) = 3.2 inches
- Base width (C) = 2.41 inches
- Center of front edge to rear edge (D) = 1.8 inches
- Distance across the "neck" = 1.42 inches
- Width of the top (E) = 1.15 inches
Tnis grip is made without screw holes, so I can put them
where you indicate on your tracing if you order a screw
mount version (two-piece grip kit). Note that if you do
ask for the screw mount kit, and don't send a tracing with
screw hole location marked, all I can do is use the most
common location which is that of the standard Colt factory
3rd generation grips. This may or may not put the screw
where it clears the hammer spring or frame bracing in your
gun. I have no idea without your tracing, so this is not
a warranty return situation. If you want a replacement,
send a tracing so I know where to put the screw!
Alternatively, you can order the grip as a 3-piece kit to
make a 1-piece grip. This kind of grip ONLY works with
a gun having a removable back strap. The 1-piece grip is
sent as two panels and a spacer, which you would sand to
exact width of your gun's frame and then epoxy glue to one
panel, and then the other.
If you don't know whether your gun has a removable back
strap, check for two screws that attach the rear part of
the grip frame on either side of the hammer, and one or
two screws in the bottom of the grip frame that hold it to
the front portion of the frame. If your gun has grips
with no mounting screw through them, and you can see metal
frame all around the grips, rear, front, and bottom, then
the gun most likely does have a removable back strap.
Be sure to use the proper kind and size of screw drive to
unfasten the grip frame screws. Hollow ground flat blades
that fit the slot width and screw head diameter properly
will prevent damage to the screws. The screwdriver you
use to open paint cans probably will mess up the screw
slots. If you don't have the right tool, take the gun to
a qualified gunsmith and have him take off the frame and
remove the old grip (usually it must be tapped lightly
with a rawhide or plastic faced mallet to dislodge it from
the frame). Measure the frame rather than the grips, since
it will be much easier to make a tracing by putting a
3 x 5 index card corner in the top front corner of the
frame, with the back strap re-attached, and trace around the
frame. You can then cut out this tracing to make a
paper grip, which I call a template. Templates are exactly
what I make out of tracings anyway, so if you want to try
the template on your gun first, that's one more check on
proper size. Send the template, or the tracing, as you
wish. I cut it out and hold it on the back of the grip.
If the grip covers it entirely, the grip is big enough.
