This is a Birds Head grip kit which was patterned after a Pietta Traditions Single Action Army revolver grip. Of course, it may fit other bird's head frames as well. Be certain to check the dimensions against your gun's frame. If your gun is the same or slightly smaller, then this should work. If your gun frame is larger in any direction, then this grip won't fit. You can always sand the edges to make it smaller but it is difficult to sand things larger.
The grip can be ordered as a 1-piece kit with a spacer, or as a 2-piece kit with screw mounting. The mounting style depends on the grip frame. Any kind of grip frame works with the screw mount 2-piece set. But only a removable back strap frame will work with a 1-piece grip. Ruger single actions have solid grip frames. Most Colt replicas have removable back straps, but some similar looking 1873 style near-replicas may have solid frames even if they look like a Model P otherwise. Just look at the top rear, near the hammer, and see if there are screws holding the back strap to the main gun frame.
Grip Dimensions
- (B) Overall height from tip of "beak" (at bottom) to flat at top = 3.10 inches
- {W) Width across grip at screw location = 1.6 inches
- (E) Width of top flat area = 1.1 inches
- (A) Length of front edge = 0.92 inches
- (D) Center of front edge straight back to rear edge = 1.8 inches
- (C) Width across neck = 1.4 inches
- thickness at top = .33 inches
- Thickness at lower base in thickest portion = 0.51 inches
As always, the best and usually the only way to assure that a given grip will work with your gun is to make a template or pattern and send it to me. First make a tracing of your grips (if they are the screw mount style) or of the gun frame (if the gun is a removable back strap style and the grips you have now are 1-piece type). Tracing the gun frame is easier if you find a fairly thick book and lay it flat on the table. Then place a 3 x 5 index card on top of the book, and arrange the gun so that the grip frame rests on this index card.
The book allows you to position the thicker parts of the gun frame away from the tracing, hanging off the book. You can use other books to stablize the position of the barrel so that it is easier to hold the grip frame firmly against the 3 x 5 card and run a pencil around the outside of the grip frame. Once you have a good tracing, cut it out with scissors and fit it to the gun just like you want the grip to fit. That would mean trimming up the top of the pattern so it fits properly in the gun frame, where you couldn't really trace that part on the paper. It's a bit of work but well worth doing, since that pattern is all I will have to match. The closer it fits your gun the better choice of grip shape and size can be made.
