Optional note:
Are you sending a tracing?:
YES! I want to assure proper size/shape. Tombstone is responsible for fit to tracing. Tracing will show hole pattern. **************************************
NO. I will be responsible if I choose the wrong size grip. I will measure my gun and compare to the listed specs. If I order a grip that is the wrong size or shape, I agree that it is NOT returnable. *****************************************************
I already mailed a tracing BEFORE I placed this order.
Available in natural or aged ivory, pearl or solid colors, the deeply carved Chinese Dragon grips lend an exotic touch of elegance to the familiar .45 Auto. It is made shorter at the top to clear the safety and slide lock, rather than being relieved to overlap it. It is also just slightly more narrow than some of the other 1911 grips listed here. The hole spacing is for the standard government specs on full sized pistols. I do not have a version of this for compact frame models.

This grip is not available with medallions (it would look terrible!).

Hole spacing is a standard 3.075 inches, with two 1/4-inch diameter stud recesses on the back and .280-diameter screw head recess on the front. Just finish sanding the back to your desired thickness, deepen the stud holes if necessary, lightly sand and polish the edges and radius cutouts, and use a spray wax finish on the carved side to preserve the finish against staining.

The Chinese Dragon was carved by hand by a Viet Nam veteran many years after he left the service. He sent the original grips to Tombstone Gun Grips to have them copied in ivory, which they were. The original mold was retained, and the grips sent back to the old vet, who later died. The original grips apparently were lost in the settling of his estate.

But the story of the dragon began when he was a young soldier seeking the company of a Vietnamese lady of the evening. He noticed when she disrobed that her back was covered with an elaborate tattoo of a dragon, from the nape of her neck to her buttocks.

He asked her if he could photograph her tattoo, and she agreed (possibly not without additional compensation). Long afterward, the novelty of the picture wore off and it was stored with his other belongings after he was discharged from duty. It lay in the bottom of a trunk for years, and he taught himself wood carving during that time. Then he came across the trunk, found the photo, and thought it would make an interesting pattern for a hand carved set of Colt 1911 .45 pistol grips. And thus the Chinese Dragon grips were created, cloned by Tombstone, and have now become one of the most popular grips we make!

From a long ago and far away war in Southeast Asia to the memoirs of a Viet Nam vet, and then into your hands... the Chinese Dragon grips evoke a different time and place in the history of the venerable Colt 1911 pistol.

You can use a Dremel or other rotary bit tool to make a relief cut on the right back panel if needed for an ambi-safety. The material is easy to machine and carve, as it does not have the tendancy of splitting common to wood grain. It is also quite tough, far stronger than injection molded, mass produced thermosetting plastic grips. The material may be a form of plastic, but it is a very strong, heat resistant form: exothermic epoxy reaction formed in open top molds, mixed from two clear chemicals which then change to the desired color and become "set" in a few seconds. The grip is then cured at 450-degrees F for 30 minutes to toughen it up to a Shore Hardness of 70 and a tensile strength many times greater than wood, factory plastics, ivory or pearl.
