This is a very large grip for one of the Uberti 1860 Army
replicas. It is much larger than the original Colt grip,
and even larger than the "oversized" 1860 Uberti model 60c.
Be sure to compare your gun frame dimensions with the specs
shown below. Of course, on the plus side, if you order a
grip that is too large, you can always cut, file, or sand
it smaller! It's just that you don't want to do that any
more than necessary for a perfect fit.
This grip can also be used as a "blank" or generic starting
point to make a lot of other similar single action grips if
you don't mind the re-shaping and sanding involved. The
material itself is strong, yet easily worked. You can
sand, file, saw, and drill it more easily than wood, because
it has no grain to split and crack.

Note: If you want to
order a 2-piece screw mounted kit, be SURE you send a
pencil tracing that shows WHERE you want the screw hole!
If you order a 2-piece, screw-mount kit and do NOT
send a pencil tracing with the screw hole indicated,
then you agree to accept the
standard location that I must use instead. It may or
may not position the screw properly for your particular
gun, even if it is a Uberti 1860 Army: they differ.
The Uberti hammer spring and frame leaves a moderate
amount of room for the spacer, and this spacer is made to
take advantage of the long backstrap area as a bearing
surface. One-piece grips are clamped in place by being
pressed against the top of the frame, and the front edge,
from pressure against the bottom and back edge of the
interior spacer block.
You will want to sand the spacer to fit it exactly to
the inside of the backstrap both at the bottom and rear
edge, and then epoxy cement the spacer on one grip panel
to align it with the frame. Then after the cement has
cured, sand the spacer block to the exact thickness of
your gun frame, and epoxy the other panel in place to create a 1-piece
grip. This kind of grip ONLY works on guns which have a
removable back strap (not on solid grip frame guns like
the Rugers, for instance).
You can also choose to mount the grip with a screw. In
that case, a pin or spacer should also be used to bear
against the inside base of the backstrap, or in the solid
rear corner of the backstrap, so the grip will not slip.
Most guns that were built for a screw mounted, 2-panel
grip have a pin in the frame which aligns with a hole
in the back of the grip. If your gun does not have an
alignment pin, then using a 1/8-inch or 3/16-inch diameter
dowel pin pressed into a shallow hole you make in the
grip back, so that the pin presses firmly against the
inside of the frame, will work. You may need two pins,
one against the base and one against the back of the
frame, to keep it from moving under heavy recoil. Use a
small dental bur instead of a twist drill to make the
hole, so the bit won't be pulled through the grip
accidently (or use a drill press to control depth).
