The AJ Ordnance .45 caliber Thomas pistol used fragile,
poorly-designed grips of thermosetting, brittle plastic
with a hollow back and screw mount posts that broke easily.
The back of the grips were relieved at the top for
operating components, and an oddly shaped projection on
the back of both grips helped secure the grips and take
some of the pressure off the screw posts.
This replica set of grips is solid, tough polyurethane
resin and does not have the fraile posts for the two
screws per panel, so the two projecting blocks are not
needed to adsorb recoil. You can make them from a block
of material provided, if you wish, and epoxy them to the
back of the grips. But the grips will be well secured
simply by using the four original mounting screws.
The originals were a gloss black plastic. The closest
simulation is Tombstone's "ebony" black polymer (which is
much stronger and heat resistant as well). However, ivory
and colored grips including various shades of pearl look
very nice on this well-built, black-oxide finished gun.
Because of the curved surfaces of the grip, and the
checkering molded into the surface, smaller size medallions
from 5/8 to 1/2 inch are recommended (not the 3/4-inch or
7/8 inch, which would not lie flush on all edges without
being inset too deeply to look good).
Since there was only the one model gun that even comes close
to using these grips, a tracing isn't required. Either
you have the right gun or you don't, and the grips will
need to be fitted by some handiwork with a Dremel tool to
make the proper sized relief at the top. A block of
material is provided in case you want to sand and shape
the two spacer blocks, and epoxy them on the back, even
though it isn't necessary with this strong material and
the solid design. If your gun doesn't say "Thomas" on it,
don't order these grips because they don't fit anything
else!
