This is a relatively thin blank with angled sides (parallelogram) which provide enough area to cut two typical auto-loader grips of the type and angle used on the High Standard militry-style grip pistols, and similar long, fairly narrow grips, with moderately thin profiles. For example, I use this blank to make a pair of High Standard HD Military grips. The 1/4 inch thickness won't provide enough for a thumb rest or much of a taper, but it is just right for more or less parallel or flat profiles found on most of the original pistols.
Blanks can be cut with a scroll saw or band saw (I prefer metal-cutting blade pitch and size but you can use the finer spaced wood cutting blades). The material is easy to file to shape, sand and polish with progressively finer abrasive paper or cloth (similar to what you might use for automobile refinishing). It can be carved, routed, drilled, and shaped with rotary bits in a Dremmel or other rotary tool. Hand carving is easier than with wood as there is no grain to split.
