This is a 14mm darkened brass shade medallion with the double-headed
Byzantine Eagle crest symbol, used in various forms by the
Greek Orthodox church, Russia, Prussia, the Scottish Rite Temple
in Canada, and many other organizations and nations.
One of the meanings of the double headed eagle was vigillance
toward both East and West (in early Russia). Another was the
dual roles of the state and
the church in Greece. It is one of the oldest known crests with usage
earlier than the Roman and Greek empires.
