Like an elongated comma, the typical Colt single action spacer
fits between two grip panels and is the exact width of the
grip frame. No screws are used, but the two panels are
sanded to exact fit for your gun, then the spacer is
sanded to the width of the back strap. The spacer is
glued with 5-minute epoxy to one panel, allowed to cure, and
then the other panel is attached.
The spacer is normally about 0.46 inches thick. If you
need a thicker spacer, let me know in the "note". I can
provide this shape up to about 0.75 inches thick. If you
don't specify a thickness, I'll just send the standard
one. Be sure to measure the thickness of your gun's frame
where the grip panels mount to it (usually the backstrap
thickness). The spacer needs to be at least that thick so
you can sand it to exact fit.
The spacers are about 0.73 to 0.80 across the thick part
(bottom) and about 2.4 to 2.5 inches tall. The exact size
doesn't make much difference, since you just need something
that can be mounted flush against the backstrap, pushing
the grip firmly into the top corner of the frame so it is
held securely. The shape needs to avoid contacting the
hammer spring, but other than that, there isn't much of
a requirement for a particular outline. You will sand
the back and bottom a little to match your particular
backstrap shape, and that's what counts. The thickness
of course is important, which is why the spacer comes
with detailed instructions for fitting.
This makes a "one-piece" grip using the 3 piece kit. If you
should happen to need a spare spacer, this is it! Some
spacers are more triangular, such as the one for the
Colt Walker. The Colt Lightning/Thunderer uses a more
curved, shorter spacer. Semi-auto pistol grips sometimes
use a small, thin rohmbus or parallelogram shape spacer
which fits snugly into the cutout of the magazine well
side wall to keep the grip from turning.
Since the spacer is not visible when the grips are on the
gun, the color really is a matter of your option. It is less
costly to simply take whatever shade of ivory is ready
to ship, since mixing special colors or pearl effects costs
far more than the spacer is worth. If you really want a
certain color, or pearl effect, it is best to order it
with the set of grips, since there is no extra charge for
sending a spacer instead of a screw mount kit, and the
color is usually matched from the same mix.
If you want a general match but don't want to pay for a
specific mix just for one spacer, note the color you want
and I'll try to send something close. Again, since the
spacer does not show, any color would work just as well
as any other, and I normally have plenty of ivory and
aged ivory plus a handful of odd colors on hand.
