This is an oversized grip for the Uberti (and possibly other)
versions of the Walker Colt. You'd think that as rare as
a Walker is in the real version, any copy would be faithful
to the shape and size of the original. You'd be wrong.
As with so many other "clones", there are about as many
variations in size as there are copies. I have made three
different molds, so far, to try and match as many of these
versions as possible. This one is large enough so that you
probably can sand it a little to fit just about any of
the variations. But the only way to know for sure is to
make a pencil tracing on a 3 x 5 index card around the outside
of your grip frame, or the backside of your grips, and
mail it to me. I can use that to gauge the size/shape
and see if there's any chance what I have will work.
If not, I can probably add yet another mold, eventually.
But it saves you return shipping costs if you can send
the tracing first, and let me see if the grip you ordered
is the grip you actually need. A little too big is no
problem at all. You just sand the edges to fit. A little
too small? You guessed it...can't sand it bigger!
This grip is made only in the 3-piece style (spacer and two
grip panels). You sand the panels to fit your gun, and
then fit the spacer to the gap inside the frame behind the
hammer spring, making sure the spring can flex without
interference. Then hold one grip panel to the gun in
the right position, mark the inside of the frame on the
back of the grip, and epoxy glue the spacer to the
grip. Before the glue sets, make sure the spacer and
grip still align the way you want on the gun frame and
"tweak" the position slightly if not. Let the epoxy
cure for several hours even if it is "5-minute" epoxy.
Then sand the thickness of the spacer so it is flat and
exactly the thickness of your gun's frame. (Make sure
before you get this far that it is thick enough, not
already too thin. If it is, email me and I'll send you
a thicker spacer, no problem. We work things out, you
and I, so the grip fits when you are done. People of good
will can always solve problems with a little communication.)
Gun frames vary in thickness, sometimes even in the
same model made at different times or by different
contractors. But I try to provide a spacer that is plenty
thick enough. It is easy to sand once attached to one
grip panel. That makes a dandy handle for holding and
moving the spacer over a tacked-down piece of sandpaper
to adjust the thickness.
When the spacer is the right thickness, put the grip
back on the gun and epoxy the other panel to the
spacer. Of course, the gun must have a removable back
strap for this to work or you can't ever take the grip
off again! That is why the one-piece style is only used
with Colts that don't have a more modern solid grip frame.
Rugers and other more modern guns with solid frames
would require some kind of tricky locking mechanism to
eliminate the standard grip screw. I've seen that done
and it is technically feasible, but kind of expensive
as an alternative for the grip screw.
On the old style
Colts, like the Walker, the removable frame section makes
it practical to create a 1-piece grip from this 3-part kit.
It is more authentic even if the size or shape of the grip
frame isn't exactly a true copy of the original in most
clones.
