This set of smooth grips is made for the Bonifacio
Echeverria 7.65mm Browning (.32 ACP) pistol made in the
Eibar region of Spain (Basque), and sold to the French as the "RUBY"
brand during World War I. Izarra is the Basque word for
Star, but the brand was not always used on early production
from the firm which
later was called Star Bonifacio Echeverria, S.A.
The French military contracted for pistols including the Pistolet Automatique
de 7.65, type "Ruby,". This is a simplified copy of the Browning 1903
(made by Fabrique Nationale in Belgium). Many firms in
the Basque Eibar region were
involved in producing pistols for the French during
World War I.
While quality control on the Spanish side was often very
poor, the French inspected all firearms before issue,
and only accepted those that passed to troops in the
field. It seems that rejects may have made it to the
commercial market, and this led to some of the
reputation for Spanish pistols being cheap, unreliable
copies. The Bonifacio Echeverria pistols were always of
excellent quality. The Basque "Izarra" brand name was
first used on these pistols, known generically as the
"RUBY", but later the brand was changed to "STAR" (probably
for export to English-speaking countries).
These grips are mounted by two original screws (none
available from Tombstone at this time). Because of the
variations in production over time, especially with the
military contracts during the war, it is important that
you make and send a pencil tracing around your existing
grips, or cut out a 3 by 5 inch index card to make a
pattern (paper grip) for each side of your pistol, and
mark the screw holes accurately. I will use this pattern
or tracing to make sure the holes are in the right places
on your new grips.
If you don't want to send a tracing, but will instead be
responsible for measuring and comparing your gun to the
specs listed, I will send the grips with the holes as
indicated below.
If the hole spacing or diameter is not as shown below on
your particular gun, then you really need to make a tracing
and mail it to me with the holes clearly and accurately
indicated, as well as the diameter for the screw head,
and the diameter for the screw shank. Also write down
the overall screw length (including the head) and the
length of either the threaded portion (shank) or the
height of the screw head. I can use that info to determine
how deep to make the hole so your screw will project
properly from the back of the grip and engage the gun.
Left Grip dimensions
- Width across top = 1.58 inches
- Width across bottom up to the notch = 1.28 inches
- Length of front edge = 3.8 inches
- Length of rear edge to notch = 3.46 inches
Standard hole specs if no other provided:
- Standard hole spacing = 3.22-in between centers
- Top hole center, from grip top = 0.31 inches
- Bottom hole center, from grip bottom = 0.31 inches
- Standard hole specs = 0.150-in minor diam, 0.280-in major diam.
Right Grip dimensions
- Width across top = 1.58 inches
- Width across bottom = 1.60 inches
- Length of front edge = 3.8 inches
- Length of rear edge = 3.8 inches
There are two holes per grip panel. I will drill them to
match your drawing or pattern, to insure that they fit
your version of this gun if you send the pattern. If not,
then you agree that whatever standard pattern I use will
be acceptable whether or not it matches your particular
example of this gun (since there is nothing else I can do
without your pattern).
