The Spencer Safety Hammerless Revolver was manufactured
by Maltry and Henley in the 1890s. Even though it looks
a bit like a top break, it actually is a solid
frame revolver, chambered for .32 S&W. The original used
fancy hard-rubber grips. Mounted at the rear of the
frame, at the "hump" is a thumb activated safety, which
blocks the operation of the hammer when engaged.
Most revolvers do not have safeties, of course, but this one does.
So do some models of Forehand top breaks such as the one
illustrating the Forehand grip in one of my listings.
These two early revolvers in my collection have excellent
condition original grips, from which I make the copies
in any color or pearl effect, shown here.
The little bump at the top of the frame, which looks a little
like a top break catch, is actually a bar the moves up and
down with a bolt or metal tab that fits a notch in the
cylinder and helps lock the cylinder in position as the
trigger is pulled. You can press it and release the cylinder
so it can be rotated freely. The pin and projection at
the front lower part of the frame, which again looks a
bit like a top break pivot or hinge, is really a release
and pin holding the cylinder axel in place, and releasing
the pin so it can be pulled forward to remove the
cylinder.
Here are the grip dimensions:
- Width across top corners (A) = 1.00 inch
- Height of rear corner (E) = 2.55 inch
- Height of front corner (D) = 1.78 inch
- Width of top steps (H) and (I) = 0.15 inch
- Height of round top above line joining corners = 0.3 inch
- Width across narrow part of neck = 0.84 inch
- Width across flat base (C) = 0.95 inch
- Width across screw hole center = 1.1 inch
- Height of screw hole center (F) = 1.0 inch
- Screw hole center to front edge = 0.52 inch
