This is the factory 1917 Savage grip which slides into
a dovetail undercut at the top and bottom of the panel
opening. You will possibly need to gently sand grip
edge to make it fit your gun. The edges are already
angled and fit the sample gun, but this is a very close
tolerance fit and a little touch-up may be needed for
other guns.
Original grips sometimes are broken when people pry the
brittle hard rubber, trying to force a grip free from
accumulated dried oil and dirt. These grips are stronger
and will withstand considerably more force, but if the
gun is cleaned and the grips properly fitted, they will
slide in and out with only light effort.
There are no relief cuts on the back of the grips, and
no spacers to add. These are actually one of the most
easily fitted kits...just a small amount of trial and
error fitting with a fingernail sanding board will let
the grip slide gently into position.
Some of the versions of this gun used metal grips which
flexed slightly to snap into place, but others used a
hard rubber, pearl, or ivory. Some used a grip screw and
others relied on friction. These grips have a number 2
grip screw kit installed by default. The screw passes
completely through the frame and clamps both grips onto
it firmly. Screw-mounted originals used two short screws
which thread into the frame. If you prefer to use the
original screws which came with your gun, check the box
above and I'll just send the single screw mounting kit
separately (in case you want to install it later).
