This is the Browning 1910 (and also the same gun imported
into the USA in 1955 and called the "1955 model") grip,
designed to solve a problem with the original design. The
gun has a backstrap safety, which has to be depressed with
the web of your hand between thumb and trigger finger
primarily, in order to allow the gun to fire. But the
problem is that with normal same-thickness grips, it is
easy to pull the trigger without applying enough force to
the grip safety to fully disengage it.
The rear edge of the grip, and the normal thickness of
a factory style grip at the top, tends to position the
hand so that if you are in a hurry to fire, you might not
get a straight-on grip that pushes down the grip safety
fully because your hand will engage grip edge first.
This grip has an ambidextrous finger groove or thinned
channel near the top, which both guides your trigger
finger and thumb, and gets the web of your hand closer to
the rear frame rather than stopping it against both rear
grip edges at the top. This gives you more leverage on
the grip safety even if your hand isn't in the ideal
position (think "defensive action" rather than aiming at
a nice stationary target that isn't about to harm you).
I tried this idea after failure to fire issues with this
gun during more than one "BUG" practical pistol scenario.
(BUG means Back Up Gun, and is both a lot of fun and quite
revealing as to how your equipment and you might function
under even the mild competitive stress of hitting the
right targets with a clock running and doing everything
correctly.)
It turned out that the grip safety, while functioning
perfectly with a normal and proper grip, would fail to
fully engage (or actually, disengage) when I was thinking
about all the things that had to be done in a few seconds
from various moving positions, using available cover, and
having a less than perfect grasp of the pistol. But with
the groove and thinned front and rear top sections on the
grip, the problem went away. The gun also came to a more
natural hold or at least my hand found a familiar position
more rapidly than on a straight uniform thickness of
grip.
The smooth surface shows off pearl and translucent effects
much better than a checkered one. It is easier to clean
and easier to keep in good repair since minor dings are
easy to sand and polish (unlike a checkered surface).
The grip comes with two spacers, which you epoxy to the
back after sanding to fit exactly in the magazine well
cut-outs. These keep the grip from moving and the
screw keeps them clamped snugly on the gun.
The grip normally will be sent with a 2-56 mounting kit
installed, unless you check the box indicating otherwise.
In that case I will send the screw kit separately, so you
can decide to use it later or use the factory screw instead.
